So when someone asks me why their glass keeps streaking, I can tell you the honest answer up front. It is almost never the spray. The usual culprit is the cloth. Streak free glass comes down to three things working together:
- A clean, lint free, tightly woven cloth as the final buff (microfibre made for glass is the standard choice).
- The two cloth method: one slightly damp cloth to clean, one dry cloth to buff dry before the surface can air dry on its own.
- The right amount of solution. Too much product is one of the most common causes of streaks, often more so than the wrong cloth.
If you only remember one thing, remember this: buff the glass dry with a clean dry cloth while it is still slightly wet. Glass that air dries leaves whatever was dissolved in the water sitting on the surface, and that is what you see as a film or streak.
Why the cloth matters more than the cleaner
Glass is non porous, so anything you leave behind has nowhere to go. It just sits on the surface and catches light. A cloth has two jobs on glass: lift the dirt and moisture off, and leave nothing of its own behind. A poor cloth fails at both. A terry towel sheds fibres. An old tea towel that has been through the wash with fabric softener leaves a waxy film. A thick plush microfibre meant for car duco is too lofty and just pushes water around rather than absorbing and clearing it.
The cloths that win on glass are flat and dense, with a tight surface that wipes the moisture into a thin even sheet and then takes it away. That is the whole trick.
The cloth types, ranked for glass
Here is how the common options stack up specifically for glass and mirrors. GSM means grams per square metre, a rough measure of how thick and dense a cloth is.

The winner for most homes: a flat weave glass microfibre
If you buy one cloth specifically for glass, make it a flat weave glass or polishing microfibre, somewhere in the 200 to 300 GSM range with 250 GSM a reliable sweet spot. These are sometimes sold as glass cloths, polishing cloths or lens style cloths in a larger size. They are smooth to the touch rather than fluffy, and they pull moisture into a thin film and clear it without leaving fibres. This is the cloth you reserve for the final dry buff.
The best all round choice for big jobs: waffle weave
For large windows, glass sliding doors and shower screens, a waffle weave microfibre is hard to beat. The raised grid pattern gives it more surface area and a higher thirst for water, so it dries a big wet pane quickly and still finishes clear. Around 300 to 400 GSM is the sweet spot. What not to reach for
Skip thick plush microfibre for the buffing step. It is a brilliant cloth for wiping a benchtop or cleaning the frame, but on glass it is too lofty to leave a clear finish. Skip cotton terry and old tea towels entirely, because they shed. And while newspaper genuinely worked in the era of high rag content paper and oil based inks, modern newsprint is inconsistent and leaves ink on your hands and your frames.
Quality matters: not all microfibre is the same
Here is something the price tag does not always tell you. Two cloths can both say microfibre on the label and behave completely differently on glass. The good ones are split fibre microfibre, where each strand is split into many finer filaments during manufacture. That splitting is what creates the millions of tiny edges that grab moisture and grime and hold them rather than smearing them around. Cheap microfibre is often unsplit or barely split, so it feels slick and almost plasticky, and on glass it tends to push water into streaks rather than lift it.
You cannot always tell from the packaging, but you can tell with your hands. A quality split fibre cloth has a slight grab or cling when you drag it across dry skin or a fingernail, almost like it catches. A poor one slides straight off and feels smooth and shiny. In my experience the genuinely good glass cloths are dense, a little grippy, and hold their shape after dozens of washes, while the bargain bin ones go flat and slick within a few washes and stop buffing clear. If a multipack of microfibre is suspiciously cheap, that is usually why.
What size cloth should you buff with?
Size is the part most people never think about, and it quietly makes the job easier or harder. For mirrors and small panes, a standard cloth around 40 by 40 centimetres is ideal: big enough to fold into quarters so you get several clean faces, small enough to control in one hand. Each fold gives you a fresh dry working face, so as one face loads up with moisture you simply turn to a clean one rather than smearing damp glass with a damp section.
For large windows and sliding doors, a bigger cloth or a dedicated drying towel around 40 by 60 centimetres or larger covers more glass per stroke and holds more water before it saturates, and waffle weave really shines at this size. What you want to avoid is trying to dry a whole shower screen with one small, already damp cloth, because once it is saturated it stops absorbing and starts depositing.
When a squeegee beats a cloth
For small and medium glass, a good cloth is all you need. But on large windows, glass doors and shower screens, a rubber blade squeegee paired with a cloth genuinely beats cloth alone, and it is what we reach for on the big jobs. The reason is simple physics: a cloth has to absorb every drop of water off the glass, and there is only so much it can hold before it saturates and starts leaving a film. A squeegee does not absorb anything. It shears the water cleanly off the surface in one pass, so there is far less moisture left for any streak to form from.
The method that works for me is to wet the whole pane with diluted cleaner, then pull the squeegee in slightly overlapping strokes, wiping the blade dry with a cloth after each pull. Keep the blade in contact the whole way so you do not leave a wet line behind each stroke. Then finish the very bottom edge and the corners, where water always pools, with your dry glass microfibre. That last cloth pass on the edges is what separates a professional looking window from a nearly clean one. Replace the rubber blade when it nicks or hardens, because a damaged blade leaves a line every pass.
How GSM really affects your finish
People obsess over GSM, but for glass it is the weave that matters more than the number. A dense 250 GSM flat weave will outperform a fluffy 450 GSM general cloth every time on a mirror. Use GSM as a guide within a weave type, not across types.
- Lower GSM flat weave (200 to 250): smoothest finish, ideal for the final buff and for mirrors and small glass.
- Higher GSM waffle (300 to 400): more absorbent, ideal for drying large wet panes before the buff.
- High GSM plush (400 plus): save it for surfaces, not glass.
The two cloth method, step by step
This is the single technique that makes the biggest difference, and it is how we get consistent results day in and day out. You use one cloth to clean and a second, dry cloth to buff.
- Dust or rinse first. If the glass has visible dust, grit or dried splatter, deal with that before you spray. Dragging grit around scratches glass and creates more smearing.
- Spray lightly, or apply to the cloth. Mist the glass with a light, even coat of diluted cleaner, or better yet spray onto your damp cloth rather than the glass. Less is more here. On mirrors especially, spraying the cloth instead of the surface keeps liquid from running behind the frame into the silvering.
- Clean with the damp cloth. Wipe the whole surface to lift grime, fingerprints and any film. Work top to bottom so drips fall onto unfinished glass.
- Buff dry immediately with the dry cloth. While the glass is still slightly wet, go over it with your clean dry flat weave or waffle cloth. Use straight overlapping strokes, or an S pattern, and finish each section before the solution can air dry.
- Check at an angle. Step to the side and look across the glass toward a light source. Streaks and missed spots only show at an angle. Buff any that remain with the dry cloth.

Washing your cloths: the step everyone gets wrong
A brand new microfibre cloth that has been washed with fabric softener will streak glass just as badly as a tea towel. Softener coats the fibres in a waxy residue that is designed to make fabric feel soft, and that residue transfers straight onto your glass. Treat your glass cloths well and they last for years:
- No fabric softener, ever. This is the big one. Softener kills microfibre performance.
- Wash separately from cotton and terry. Microfibre grabs lint from cotton in the wash, then deposits it on your glass. Wash microfibre with microfibre.
- Warm wash, mild detergent, light dose. A small amount of liquid detergent is plenty. Heavy detergent dosing leaves its own residue.
- Air dry or low heat. High dryer heat can melt and flatten the fine fibres over time. Line drying is kinder and free.
- Keep a dedicated glass set. Mark or colour code two or three cloths that only ever touch glass, never the toilet, the stovetop or the floor.
A simple home test: breathe on a clean dry cloth and rub it across a mirror. If it buffs clear with no smear and no lint, it is glass ready. If it smears, it needs a softener free wash, or it has reached the end of its life.
How long does a glass cloth last, and when to replace it
A quality split fibre glass cloth, washed properly without softener, will give you good service for a couple of years of regular home use, often more. What kills it early is heat, softener and grit, not age. You will know it is on the way out when the buff test starts failing: it leaves a faint smear or fine lint even after a clean softener free wash, it feels flat and slick where it used to feel grippy, or it has picked up a stain of grease or polish that will not wash out. Once a glass cloth has been contaminated with oil or silicone, no amount of washing fully resets it, so retire it to general duties like wiping skirting boards and bring in a fresh one for glass.
When a better cloth is not the right fix
Honesty matters here, because sometimes the cloth is not your problem at all:
- Hard water mineral spotting. If you live somewhere with hard water and your shower glass has cloudy white spots that will not buff off, that is mineral scale, not a cloth issue. - Old film build up. Glass that has had years of waxy or silicone based sprays may need one thorough strip down before any cloth gives a clear result. After that, a plain cloth and diluted cleaner keep it clear.
- Scratches and pitting. No cloth fixes etched or scratched glass. What looks like a permanent streak in the same spot every time is often surface damage.
- Too much product. If you have a great cloth and still streak, you are almost certainly using too much solution. Dilute more, spray less.

The best cloth in the world will streak if the liquid on the glass is too strong. Concentrated or undiluted cleaner leaves a film, because there is simply more dissolved material to dry onto the surface.
