Why does glass cleaner leave streaks? Almost always one of three things: leftover residue (from the product, hard water or old buildup), poor technique (too much spray, the wrong cloth, or wiping a dry surface), or bad timing (cleaning in direct sun so it dries before you buff). Fix the residue and the cloth and most streaks vanish.
The short version: a streak is dried residue you can see
A streak is not dirt. It is a thin film of something left behind on the glass that catches the light: surfactant residue from the cleaner, dissolved minerals from hard water, a smear of old wax or polish, or a layer of dust bound up in the liquid you just spread around. When that film dries unevenly, you get the classic rainbow smears and cloudy patches.
That single idea explains almost every streak you will ever fight. Glass is one of the least forgiving surfaces in the house because it is perfectly smooth and transparent, so anything sitting on top of it shows. A benchtop hides a faint film. A mirror in morning light does not. Once you start thinking in terms of what did I leave behind, and did it dry before I removed it, the fixes below stop feeling like guesswork.

A whole house can be spotless, but one streaky bathroom mirror or a hazy splashback is the thing someone runs a finger over at the end of a job. Over thousands of mirrors, shower screens, splashbacks and windows, the pattern is always the same: the pros are not using a secret spray. They are removing residue, controlling moisture, and buffing dry with a clean cloth. Here is each cause in turn, with the fix, and an honest note on when that fix is not actually your problem.
First, diagnose your streak
Before you change anything, look closely at what kind of streak you actually have. Streaks come in a few distinct types, and each points to a different cause and a different fix. Match what you see in the glass to the table below, then jump to that cause.

Most people find their streak in the first or fourth row: too much product, or the wrong cloth. Those two fixes alone solve the majority of cases. Work through the causes below in order and you will land on yours.
Cause 1: the product itself leaves a residue
Many all purpose and even some dedicated glass sprays contain ingredients designed to cling: gloss agents, heavy fragrance carriers, thickeners and high loads of surfactant. On a porous surface that is fine, even desirable. On glass it is a leading cause of streaks, because whatever does not evaporate stays put as a visible film.
There are really two ways this goes wrong, and it helps to separate them, because they have different fixes. The first is the formula: some cleaners simply carry more residue than glass can tolerate, no matter how carefully you use them. The second is the dose: even a clean rinsing formula will streak if you drench the glass, because excess liquid leaves excess residue. Get both right and the film problem disappears.
How to know this is your problem
The streaks appear even on a freshly washed window, in the shade, with a clean cloth. You wipe, it looks clean while wet, then a haze blooms as it dries. That haze is the formula, not the glass.
The fix
Choose a low residue formula and use less of it. Counterintuitively, more spray means more streaks, because there is more to remove before it dries. A light mist is plenty on glass. If your current cleaner hazes no matter how little you use, the formula is the issue rather than your hand. A genuine glass capable cleaner is built to rinse and buff clean rather than dry to a film, which is the whole difference between a product that streaks and one that does not.
When this is not the fix
If you have already switched to a light dose and a quality formula and you still streak, stop blaming the bottle. Move to the cloth, water and buildup sections below, because those are now the more likely culprits.
Cause 2: hard water and mineral deposits
Across much of Australia the tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When you spray a cleaner diluted with hard water, or wipe with a damp cloth rinsed under the tap, those minerals get spread across the glass. As the water evaporates the minerals are left behind as a faint white film or spotting, which reads as streaks.
The fix
For the final buff on mirrors and windows, use distilled or filtered water rather than straight tap. You only need a small amount. Many people keep one spray bottle mixed with distilled water purely for glass, and use ordinary tap water for everything else. If you already have visible mineral scale baked onto shower glass, that is a separate descaling job (a mild acid such as diluted white vinegar or a citric acid solution), not a streak you can buff away with cleaner alone.
When this is not the fix
If your water is soft, or you already use filtered water and still streak, hard water is not your issue. Do not spend money on distilled water you do not need; the cause is somewhere else on this list.
Cause 3: the wrong cloth
This is the single most common avoidable mistake, and the easiest to fix. Paper towel sheds lint and pulp fibres onto glass. Old terry towelling pushes water around without absorbing the residue. A cloth washed with fabric softener carries a waxy coating that transfers straight onto your mirror, then smears the moment it meets cleaner.
The fix: the two cloth method
- Cloth one, a slightly damp flat weave microfibre: wipe the glass to lift grime and spread a thin film of cleaner.
- Cloth two, a dry clean flat weave microfibre: immediately buff the same area in straight overlapping strokes until it is completely dry and clear.
The dry second cloth is what removes the residue before it can dry into a streak. Flat weave microfibre (sometimes sold as glass or polishing microfibre) is far better on glass than the plush waffle cloths you use for spills, because the dense flat surface buffs rather than smears. Never wash your glass cloths with fabric softener, and do not dry them on a sheet that adds softener either.
Straight lines or circles, and the squeegee question
Two questions come up constantly on the job, so here are honest answers. On wiping pattern: circles tend to chase residue around and leave swirl marks, so finish with straight overlapping strokes, top to bottom or side to side, lifting any remaining film off the edge of the glass rather than spreading it. A common pro trick is to wipe one side of a window with horizontal strokes and the other side with vertical strokes, so if a streak shows you instantly know which face it is on.
On large windows and glass doors, a squeegee beats a cloth. Wet the whole pane with your diluted cleaner, then pull the squeegee in slow overlapping strokes, wiping the blade with a clean cloth after each pass, and finish the very edges and corners with a dry microfibre where the blade cannot reach. A squeegee leaves far less residue than a cloth on a big pane simply because it removes the water in one clean sweep instead of dragging it around.
When this is not the fix
If your cloth is already a clean flat weave microfibre, your strokes are straight, and you still streak, the problem is upstream: too much product, hard water, or buildup. A cloth can only remove what is there.
Cause 4: old buildup under the new clean
If your glass has months or years of layered cleaner residue, nicotine, kitchen grease vapour or polish on it, a normal wipe just rearranges that layer into streaks. You are cleaning the new dirt off an old film, and the old film is what smears back across the glass.
The fix: a one off deep strip
- Spray the glass generously and let the cleaner dwell for thirty to sixty seconds so it can break down the grease and old film.
- Agitate with a damp microfibre, working in sections, paying attention to the corners where buildup is heaviest.
- Wipe the loosened residue away with a clean damp cloth so you are not buffing it straight back on.
- Finish with a dry flat weave buff.
This is where an enzyme cleaner earns its place. Enzymes such as protease, amylase and lipase target the protein, starch and fat based grime that makes up most of what builds on kitchen and bathroom glass over time. Give an enzyme cleaner a short dwell on the old film and it does the lifting, so your buff is removing loosened residue rather than fighting it. After one proper strip, ongoing maintenance becomes a quick light wipe.
When this is not the fix
Brand new glass, or glass you clean weekly, will not have meaningful buildup. Skip the deep strip and go straight to a light maintenance wipe.
Cause 5: cleaning in direct sunlight or heat
Spray a window in full Australian sun and the cleaner starts evaporating before you have finished wiping. It dries in place as a film, and you are left buffing dried residue, which is close to impossible to do cleanly. Hot glass does the same thing.
The fix
Clean windows and mirrors in the shade, early morning, or late afternoon. Move with the sun: do the shaded side of the house first and chase the shade around. Indoors this matters less, but a sunlit bathroom mirror in summer can still flash dry. If you cannot avoid the heat, work in smaller sections so you buff each one dry before it sets.
When this is not the fix
Streaks on an indoor mirror at night are obviously not a sunlight problem. Re check residue, cloth and technique instead.
The one thing that ties it all together: less product, the right tools
If you read back over the five causes, two threads run through nearly all of them. The first is that excess liquid, whether it is cleaner or hard water, is the raw material of a streak: everything you put on the glass has to come back off before it dries. The second is that the tools do the precision work: a dry flat weave microfibre or a squeegee is what actually clears the residue. Get the dose light and the tools right and you have removed the cause of most streaks before you even start.
There is one more habit worth naming, because it quietly causes streaks without anyone noticing. Switching between products drags residue from one onto another. A waxy furniture spray, a gloss boosting multi surface cleaner or a heavily fragranced bathroom spray can all leave a film that your next pass smears onto the mirror. Using one reliable low residue cleaner across the home means there is no waxy carryover waiting to streak your glass, which is a real argument for a single trustworthy bottle over a cupboard full of half used sprays.
A simple streak free routine that works every time
- Mist lightly with a properly diluted, low residue cleaner. Less is genuinely more.
- Wipe with a slightly damp flat weave microfibre to lift grime.
- Buff immediately with a dry flat weave microfibre in straight overlapping strokes (or pull a squeegee on large panes).
- Work in the shade or out of direct heat.
- For mirrors and windows in a hard water area, finish with distilled water.
- Once a season, do a deep strip to clear old buildup, then maintain with light wipes.
Follow that and streaks become rare rather than routine. The two changes that fix the most cases for the most people are switching to a flat weave microfibre and using far less product. Everything else is fine tuning.
