Streak free glass, step by step
- Mix a light glass solution: about 5ml concentrate per 1L of water. Less is more on glass.
- Mist lightly. Over wetting is the main cause of streaks, you do not need the glass dripping.
- Wipe with a clean microfibre cloth to lift the soil.
- Buff dry immediately with a second dry microfibre cloth or a flat weave glass cloth.

- Drying too fast. Direct sun or a hot window flashes the solution dry before you can buff it. Move out of the sun, or do glass early or late in the day.
Nine times out of ten it is the first two. When in doubt, use less product and buff sooner.
Bathroom and shower spray: just turn the strength up
Bathrooms are where the same concentrate earns its keep by going stronger. Soap scum, body oils, toothpaste splatter and general grime respond well to a heavier 10 to 20ml per litre mix. A simple bathroom routine
- Mix a stronger solution at 10 to 20ml per litre in a dedicated bathroom spray bottle, using warm water.
- Spray tiles, the screen, the basin and taps, then let it dwell for three to five minutes. Dwell time does the work, not scrubbing harder.
- Agitate with a non scratch pad or cloth, paying attention to grout lines and the base of the screen.
- Rinse and squeegee the glass, then buff any spots dry for a clear finish.
For glass shower screens, you get the same streak free benefit as your mirrors, so the one product handles both the scrubbing and the final clear wipe down. - Use less concentrate, not more. Too much cleaner on a floor leaves a film that attracts dirt and looks dull. The light end of the range is usually right.
- Wring the mop well. A flooded floor is slow to dry and can creep into edges and grout.
- On sealed timber and laminate, damp mop only, never leave standing water, and dry any pooling quickly.
- For very dirty hard floors, a quick light pass first to lift loose grit saves you smearing it around.

Stainless steel without the smears
Stainless shows every fingerprint and streak, so treat it a bit like glass. Use a light mix, wipe along the grain of the metal (not in circles), then buff dry with a clean microfibre cloth. The dry buff is what gives you that even, smear free finish.
How to tell if your stone or timber is actually sealed
Whether a surface is sealed decides how freely you can clean it, so it is worth a ten second test before you commit. Drop a small bead of water onto an out of the way spot:
- If the water beads up and sits on top, the surface is sealed. You can clean it normally with a light mix, wipe and buff.
- If the water soaks in and darkens the surface within a minute or two, the seal is worn or the surface is raw. Use the lightest possible mix, work quickly, never leave the surface wet, and consider having it resealed.
Most modern kitchen benchtops, bathroom vanities and timber floors are sealed, but seals wear over time, especially around sinks, cooktops and high traffic walkways. When in doubt, run the water test and treat a thirsty surface gently.
Where a dedicated product is still worth keeping

Ovens and baked on carbon
Burnt on carbon and polymerised fat inside an oven are a different problem to surface grime. A general cleaner will help with light, fresh oven soils, but a heavily baked oven really wants a dedicated oven product or a long dwell with a paste and heat. Keep one oven cleaner for the deep jobs and use the concentrate for the regular wipe outs in between, which stops the carbon building up in the first place.
Blocked or slow drains
A drain blockage is a physical and biological problem inside the pipe, not a surface to be wiped. A surface cleaner is simply the wrong tool here. Keep a dedicated drain treatment (an enzyme based maintenance product is a gentle, septic friendly option), or reach for a plunger and mechanical clearing for an actual blockage.
Heavy limescale, rust and mould stains
Light, fresh mineral marks respond to a stronger mix and dwell time, helped by the food acids in the formula. But hard set limescale, established rust, or mould that has penetrated old silicone may need a dedicated descaler or a targeted treatment. This is about saving you frustration: a general cleaner can maintain these areas and slow them down, but it is not a miracle stripper for years of build up.
Raw timber, unsealed stone and delicate specialty surfaces
Any porous or unsealed surface (raw timber, unsealed natural stone, certain antique finishes) should be treated with care and the manufacturer guidance, regardless of how gentle the cleaner is. When in doubt, test a small hidden patch first.
The dilution maths: how one bottle makes so much spray

At an everyday all purpose dilution of about 10ml per litre of water, each made up bottle uses roughly 10ml of concentrate. In practice it is even better than that, because many jobs use less. Glass wants only about 5ml per litre, so at that strength the same bottle stretches towards 200 glass mixes. The honest summary: at typical everyday strength, one 1L bottle makes up to around 100 standard 750ml to 1L spray bottles, and the exact number depends entirely on how strong you mix.
