The short answer, with the actual maths
The number of spray bottles you get from 1L of concentrate is pure arithmetic once you know two things: the dilution rate (how much concentrate per litre of water) and the size of your spray bottle. Everything else is marketing. Here is how it works.
One litre of concentrate is 1000ml. If you dose it at 10ml of concentrate per 1 litre of finished spray, then 1000ml divided by 10ml gives you 100 litres of ready to use cleaner. Fill standard 1 litre trigger bottles and that is 100 bottles. Decant into 500ml bottles instead and the same 100 litres fills 200 of them. Dose heavier and you fill fewer. That is the whole formula, and once you see it you can work out any product on any shelf.

Commit this to memory and you will never be fooled by a "makes up to X bottles" claim again:
Bottles made = (1000ml of concentrate ÷ dose in ml per litre) ÷ (bottle size in litres)
Worked example at the everyday standard dose, in a 1 litre bottle:
- 1000ml ÷ 10ml dose = 100 litres of finished cleaner
- 100 litres ÷ 1L bottle = 100 spray bottles
And the same concentrate decanted into 500ml bottles:
- 100 litres ÷ 0.5L bottle = 200 spray bottles
Both are correct. The only thing that changed is the bottle you decant into. This is exactly why "how many bottles" answers vary so much across the internet, and why an honest answer has to state the dose and the bottle size every time. We lead with the 1 litre bottle figure because that is the more conservative, true to life count for most homes.

Read it like this: at the everyday standard dose in a 1 litre bottle, 1L of concentrate makes around 100 bottles of spray, and in concentrate terms each 500ml of finished spray costs you roughly 20c. The headline figure we use across the site is about 40c per made up 1 litre bottle, at the everyday dose of 10ml to a litre. Lighter doses for glass and quick wipes only make each bottle cheaper than that. Compare any of these to a typical ready mixed supermarket spray in the $5 to $7 range and the per bottle gap is the whole reason concentrates exist.
Why the "up to 100 bottles" figure is the honest middle
You will notice the table shows numbers as high as 400 bottles and as low as 50. We quote "up to 100 spray bottles per 1L" because it sits on the realistic everyday dose (10ml per litre) using a full 1 litre trigger bottle, which is what most households reach for. It is a figure you can actually hit in normal use, not a best case that only works if you dose at the absolute minimum into the smallest bottle.
Plenty of products quote the biggest number a calculator can justify. We would rather you mix a spray that genuinely works on the day, and still land well over a year of cleaning from a single bottle. If you do dose light or decant into 500ml bottles, brilliant, you will simply get more bottles than the headline, which is the right direction for a claim to err.
How to measure your dose accurately
Getting the count you expect depends on dosing correctly, and most people overpour. Concentrate is potent, so a heavy hand both wastes product and can leave residue. Here is how to be precise.
Step by step for a 500ml spray bottle
- Fill the empty spray bottle with cool tap water first, leaving a small gap at the top. Adding water first means less foaming.
- For a 500ml bottle at the everyday standard dose, add 5ml of concentrate (that is half of the 10ml per litre rate, because the bottle is half a litre).
- 5ml is roughly one teaspoon. A bottle cap, a measuring spoon, or a 5ml medicine syringe all work.
- Cap the bottle and invert it gently two or three times. Do not shake hard.
- Label the bottle with the scent and dose so the next person mixes it the same way.
A quick dose reference
- 5ml is about 1 teaspoon
- 10ml is about 2 teaspoons, which is easiest to get right with a measure
- 15ml is about 1 tablespoon
- 20ml is about 4 teaspoons

How long 1L actually lasts you
Bottles made is one way to picture value. Time is the other, and it is often more useful. If an average household refills a 500ml all purpose spray maybe once a fortnight, then 200 bottles from a single 1L concentrate at the everyday dose is, in plain terms, several years of all purpose spray from one purchase.
In reality you will spread that litre across more than one job. Some goes into your glass and mirror spray, some into a bathroom bottle, some into a floor bucket. The spray bottle maths assumes a fine trigger spray. Floors are mopped, not sprayed, so the dose is measured per bucket instead. HomeKind floors use 20 to 30ml per bucket (a standard mop bucket is around 8 to 10 litres of water).
At 25ml per bucket, 1L of concentrate makes about 40 buckets of mopping solution. For most homes that is a year or more of floor washing from the same single bottle you are also using for sprays. If you mop heavily or have a large home, count on the higher end of the dose and a touch fewer buckets. From the cleaning jobs we do, a single average home rarely needs more than one full bucket a week even with kids and pets through the place, so 40 buckets genuinely stretches across the better part of a year. Because the formula is greywater and septic safe, the rinse water is not a problem for homes on tank or septic systems, which matters a lot across regional Australia, and you can tip a finished bucket onto the garden without a second thought.
Glass and mirrors: where concentrate value gets quietly bigger
Most all purpose cleaners are not streak free on glass, so people buy a separate glass cleaner. That second bottle is an extra purchase that never shows up in an all purpose "bottles made" figure. When this is not the right fix
Concentrate maths is honest, but it is not magic. A few situations where the headline bottle count is not the point:
- Heavy degreasing or oven baked carbon. An everyday all in one cleaner, even diluted heavy, is not a dedicated oven or grill product. Use the right specialist tool for those jobs rather than overdosing the concentrate.
- Disinfection claims. Cleaning and disinfecting are different things. A plant based cleaner lifts and removes soil, grease and grime well, but if you specifically need to sanitise (for example after raw meat), follow proper disinfection guidance separately.
- Unsealed natural stone and raw timber. HomeKind is fine on sealed stone and sealed floors. Porous unsealed surfaces should always be patch tested first, with any cleaner.
- You only clean rarely. If you genuinely use very little cleaner, the per bottle saving is real but small in dollar terms. The bigger win there is fewer plastic bottles and fewer trips down the cleaning aisle.
Honest framing matters: the value of a concentrate is real, but it is strongest for people who clean regularly and currently buy several different ready mixed sprays.
How to compare any two concentrates fairly
If you are weighing up products, do not compare shelf prices, compare cost per litre of finished cleaner. Use the formula above on each one:
- Find the recommended everyday dose per litre on the label.
- Divide 1000ml by that dose to get litres of finished cleaner per 1L of concentrate.
- Divide the concentrate price by that litre count to get cost per litre of usable spray.
A cheaper bottle that wants 30ml per litre can easily cost more per usable litre than a dearer bottle that only needs 10ml.
