The biggest single fix: switch your laundry detergent
If you only change one thing, change your laundry product. Read the ingredient list for sodium heavy entries near the top, look for a plain no phosphate statement, and favour plant based surfactants over vague green wording. One practical tip: the rinse water from a washing machine is far lower in product than the main wash, so even if you have not changed detergents yet, diverting only the rinse is a low risk way to start reusing laundry water. The dishwasher, by contrast, is best left out of garden reuse altogether, as dishwasher detergents are typically high in salts and alkalinity.
Which water to reuse, and which to leave alone
Not all greywater is equal. As a rule of thumb for garden reuse:
- Best: shower, bath and bathroom basin water, and rinse water from the washing machine.

- Keep it sub surface or under mulch. Greywater belongs below the surface or under a layer of mulch where it soaks in, not pooling on top where people, pets and mosquitoes meet it.
- Watch the plants. Yellowing, leaf burn at the tips, wilting in moist soil or a hard crusty surface are early signs of salt build up. Back off and flush with fresh water if you see them.
- Rest the soil. Give beds a break from greywater during wet months when they do not need extra water anyway.
How much greywater per plant or bed
There is no exact dose, because it depends on soil, climate and plant, but a sense of scale helps. Think of greywater as a substitute for a normal watering, not an extra one on top. A rough starting point many guides suggest is roughly the volume you would otherwise hand water with: a few litres around the base of a shrub, more for an established tree spread across its root zone, and never so much that the water pools or runs off. A large established tree can comfortably take a full bucket or two spread around its drip line, while a small shrub wants far less. When in doubt, give less and rotate more often. The goal is to keep any one patch of soil from receiving the same salty water week after week.
A simple soil and salt watch
You do not need a laboratory to keep an eye on salt build up, though a cheap soil pH and conductivity kit from a garden centre can be reassuring if you reuse a lot of water. The free version is observation: a white or grey crust on the soil surface, water that beads and runs off instead of soaking in, soil that sets hard between waterings, or plants wilting even when the ground feels damp. Tougher, established plants generally cope best: lawns, ornamental shrubs, hardy natives that are not phosphorus sensitive, fruit trees watered at the base, and most non edible garden beds. Be cautious with seedlings, potted plants (the salts cannot drain away and build up fast in a pot), acid loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and blueberries (greywater tends to be slightly alkaline), and phosphorus sensitive natives if your cleaners are not phosphate free.
For vegetables and herbs, keep greywater off anything eaten raw and off the parts you harvest. Watering the base of fruit trees and ornamentals is the lower risk use.

Reading a label like a gardener
Marketing words like natural, green and eco are not regulated tightly enough to rely on alone. Train yourself to read the ingredients and a few honest signals instead.
- Scan for sodium heavy ingredients such as sodium sulphate, sodium carbonate and sodium silicate, especially in laundry powders. If the bulk of a powder is filler salts, that is going into your soil.
- Look for no phosphate stated plainly, and be wary of ingredients like sodium tripolyphosphate, especially for a native garden.
- Look for plant based, readily biodegradable surfactants such as coco glucoside or decyl glucoside, rather than vague claims.
- Prefer concentrates you dilute yourself, so you can use the gentlest strength that still cleans and put less total product down the drain.
